At the eleventh session of the World Urban Forum, Fondation Botnar and UN-Habitat launched the Young Gamechangers Initiative (YGI), a three-year engagement that addresses the health and wellbeing of young people in growing cities.

Funded by Fondation Botnar and led by UN-Habitat, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Block by Block Foundation, the initiative is open to all municipalities, non-profit organisations and researchers and will focus on improving the urban health of young people through their active engagement in urban governance, design of inclusive public space and digital engagement.

"By 2030, 60 per cent of the population will be under 18, which means young people are our urban future."

Maimunah Mohd Sharif,
UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN-Habitat

Objectives

  1. Strengthening governance frameworks to advance health and well-being of young people
  2. Empowering young people with voice and agency and have the right digital skills to engage in governance
  3. Promote and support local authorities in delivering public spaces that are safe, accessible and that promotes health and wellbeing for young people

The Young Gamechangers Initiative (YGI) will be launched in three intermediary cities in Colombia, India and Senegal.

The cities will be selected through an open Expression of Interest (EoI), whereby local governments and non-profit organizations express their willingness to be part of the initiative and to provide the physical space during the life-cycle of the project.

The YGI should secure a space to be located in public amenities such as local government offices, in a community or youth center, public school, or existing public facility. The gamechanger space are a non-discriminatory space, open to all young women and men regardless of personal identifications. The Gamechangers space is programmed and managed in partnership with the local government and/or non-profit organizations with significant engagement from the local youth population.

Cities will be willing to engage with UN-Habitat country offices in a series of digital engagement, co-creation and learning studios and will support the mobilization of young people. Eventually, the studios will act as a learning hub for young people where talent development, innovation and creativity are enabled.

Some of the training and learnings might include, but not limited to, training on the rights to the city, planning and governance, public space, healthy urban environments, citizen engagement, Minecraft, HerCity digital platform, Methodkit, assessment tools and others.
